Senior Police Officer Accidentally Shoot Himself in Migori County



Kegonga, Migori – Tragedy struck at Kegonga Police Station on Monday when a senior police officer, Corporal Caudence Nyangenya, accidentally shot himself while issuing a firearm to a colleague. The incident occurred within the station premises as Nyangenya, who was in charge of the Lines and armory, was handing over a Beretta pistol to James Mugo Kabachia, the Kuria East Sub-County Police Commander.

According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, the accident happened during a routine safety check. Nyangenya, while performing standard safety precautions, accidentally discharged a 9mm round from the pistol. The bullet struck his right thigh, causing significant injury.

Immediate medical attention was provided as Nyangenya was rushed to Kegonga Sub-County Hospital. Despite the initial efforts to stabilize him, his condition worsened, prompting a transfer to Migori County Hospital. Unfortunately, upon arrival at Migori County Hospital, Corporal Nyangenya was pronounced dead due to excessive bleeding.

The sudden and tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the Kegonga Police Station and the wider Migori community. Corporal Nyangenya was a respected officer known for his dedication to duty and meticulous attention to detail, especially in his role overseeing the armory.

Colleagues and officials have expressed their condolences and are mourning the loss of a committed officer. "This is a heartbreaking incident for all of us," said a senior police official. "Corporal Nyangenya was a valued member of our team, and his untimely death is a significant loss."

The officer's body has been preserved at Migori County Hospital morgue pending a post-mortem examination, which will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge.

Investigations are underway to determine if any procedural lapses contributed to the tragedy. The incident underscores the inherent risks law enforcement officers face daily, even during routine operations.
