Miguna Miguna’s Prophetic Insight on Gen Z: A Generation Beyond Tribal Boundaries

Nairobi, June 26, 2024– Controversial lawyer and political activist Miguna Miguna once made a profound prediction that seems to resonate with the current socio-political landscape in Kenya. In an interview with journalist Jeff Koinange, Miguna articulated a vision for a future Kenyan generation that would transcend tribal divisions and stand firm on principles of unity and justice.

“Jeff, let me tell you,” Miguna asserted, “a certain generation is coming that will not mind tribe. They will marry from wherever they want, they will stand for their rights, they will survive by their principles, and one day they will surprise the government by pulling themselves together regardless of their tribe, because tribe is the tool that oppressors have been using to divide Kenyans.”

Miguna's foresight appears to be materializing with the rise of Generation Z in Kenya. This generation, born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, is characterized by its digital nativity, social consciousness, and a strong sense of identity that is not confined to ethnic affiliations. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z Kenyans are increasingly engaging in cross-tribal relationships and marriages, emphasizing common values and shared humanity over ethnic background.

This shift is evident in the way young Kenyans are approaching politics and activism. Recent protests and social movements have seen a diverse coalition of youth from various ethnic groups uniting for common causes, such as demanding government accountability, fighting corruption, and advocating for social justice. Their ability to mobilize and advocate through social media platforms has amplified their voices, challenging the traditional power structures that have long relied on tribal divisions to maintain control.

Miguna’s prediction highlights a critical juncture for Kenya, as Gen Z's collective actions could significantly alter the country's political and social dynamics. By overcoming the historical tool of tribal division, this generation holds the potential to foster a more unified and equitable society. As they continue to defy expectations and assert their influence, Gen Z Kenyans are proving Miguna’s vision to be more than just a hopeful prophecy but a burgeoning reality.
