KIKUYU, Kenya - A devastating early morning accident on the James Gichuru Rironi highway has left two people dead and at least 10 others injured. The crash occurred around 6 am near the town of Muguga in Kikuyu sub-county.
According to eyewitness accounts, a Nairobi-bound bus collided violently with a truck traveling in the same direction. The bus, operated by Simba Coach, is reported to have lost control and slammed into the back of the truck.
"I heard a loud bang and immediately ran to the scene," said Mary Wangui, a local resident. "The bus had completely crumpled the back of the truck. It was a horrific sight."
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, finding two passengers on the bus who had been killed instantly. At least 10 other injured individuals, including the bus driver, were quickly transported to the nearby Kikuyu District Hospital for treatment.
"The injured passengers sustained a range of wounds, from broken bones to severe lacerations," said Dr. Fatuma Ali, the hospital's chief medical officer. "Our team is working urgently to stabilize their conditions."
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest the bus driver may have lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed or a mechanical failure.
"We are devastated by this tragic loss of life," said Simba Coach operations manager, Joseph Mwangi. "Our team is cooperating fully with the police investigation. The safety of our passengers is our utmost priority, and we are determined to understand what went wrong to prevent such an incident from happening again."
The James Gichuru Rironi highway has been the site of multiple serious accidents in recent years, highlighting the need for improved safety measures and traffic management along the busy roadway. Local leaders are calling for urgent action to address the issue and avoid future tragedies.
"Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this terrible crash," said Kikuyu sub-county administrator, Jane Wanjiru. "We will work closely with the relevant authorities to determine the cause and ensure the proper steps are taken to enhance road safety in this region."
